I Hope You Break Your Leg

That's what an old woman said to me yesterday morning. She was standing on the street corner, and as I cycled past she gave me an evil stare and launched her verbal abuse.

I can only assume that the abuse was a result of her watching me cycle through a red light. I know it's technically wrong to cycle through red lights, but it's also wrong for car drivers to drive at 5mph over the speed limit, and go the wrong way down a one-way street, but I bet she doesn't hurl abuse at those folks.

I know some cyclists hoon along the pavement in a reckless manner, and generally piss people off, and no doubt this woman had had a bad experience with one of these, and now considers all cyclists to be menaces. I'm not sure that if she had had a near miss with a car, then she would consider ALL car drivers to be menaces.

My small infraction of the law, which was at a pedestrian crossing, with nobody anywhere near to it, surely does not merit me to receive actual bodily harm. Or maybe it does. In that case perhaps we could introduce arm-breaks for speeding motorists...

Maybe it wasn't specifically to do with that red light incident.

Maybe, she'd been waiting for you all day so she could let you know that she hoped you broke your leg.
